School CouncilThe School Council is a pupil committee, which is elected on an annual basis in September, with representatives from all year groups, though the reception year only has representation from the spring term. Councillors are elected by their peers and are expected to listen to other pupils' ideas at both class council and school council level and feedback opinion. The council has a teacher representative, at present the head teacher, who helps facilitate the council meetings, though councillors set their own agendas and take minutes. Council officers are the chair, secretary and treasurer, who are selected from the year 6 councillors. The council has its own action plan which forms part of the School Development Plan and its own bank account. The school council is very active in fund raising for charities and at present supports the education of two children through Action Aid. This commitment is evidenced in the sponsored event last summer which raised in excess of £1800 for these two children to be educated for the next three years and to send a donation to the Indonesian Earthquake appeal. A bring and buy sale earlier last year raised funds for the Afghanistan Earthquake appeal and Christmas activities raised money for the homeless in the local area. The Council also has an annual project for school improvement and last year was responsible for helping in the development of a puzzle area in the playground and gaining sponsorship for this initiative from the mayor. They also had input into the additional options to the school uniform last September, which now form part of the school uniform, notably trousers for girls and a summer polo shirt for the boys. In the school’s recent and successful healthy schools assessment St Edmund’s school council was cited as an example of good practice, which is to be mentioned on the county’s healthy school website. A list of School Councillors for 2009 – 2010 is available on the school council notice board in school. As part of our education in personal relationships, during anti bullying week, and to maintain our ethos as a caring community, the School Council, through class council have created a School Covenant which encapsulates what the children consider makes a loving and friendly school. We were so pleased with their ideas and commitment to the task that we have decided to publish it around the school. Our Rights – Our School Council
