Relationship and Sex Education (RSE)

'I have come that you might have life and have it to the full’

(John 10:10)

Relationship and sex education is an integral part of fulfilling our school’s aims and mission statement.

The children learn about the nature of marriage, family life, and relationships in an age-appropriate way. Our belief is that we are all made in the image and likeness of God underpins the approach to all education in our Catholic school. Our approach to RSE, therefore, is rooted in the Catholic Church’s teaching of the human person, dignity of the whole human person and is presented positively and prudently.

We follow the guidelines set out by the Diocese of Arundel & Brighton which aims to support the children’s spiritual, social, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development. We prepare them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of life, underpinned by the Gospel Values of the Catholic Church; linking to British Values.  The RSE programme of study is developed through the the use of resources and websites suggested by the Diocese such as ‘A Journey in Love,’ 'Life to the Full', Ethos Statements(PSHE) linked to Statements to Live By, the global community (CAFOD), and healthy lifestyle websites.

We offer learning opportunities across the curriculum and beyond, through our enhanced foundation subjects curriculum , assemblies, clubs, and age-appropriate workshops run by the CORAM Life Education Centre (Life Bus). We also invite speakers from CAFOD, Mission Together, and the NSPCC to support our learning.

At St Edmund’s, we encourage children to grow into confident and emotionally secure individuals.
